Home-grown Yoga Mat Brand Madana. We speak to Theresa…

We've been happily carrying the Madana range of yoga accessories for a while now, and one day, just decided to find out the inside story.

Tell us about your love affair with Yoga. When did you start, how difficult was it to transition into teaching, who inspired (inspires!) you?

I started yoga about 5 years ago in the gym, initially just for exercise. It was one particular teacher that I liked a lot at the gym I went to, Brenda. I loved her classes so much. I started to go whenever she taught, then I started going everyday even when she wasn’t teaching, then I started practicing at home. She encouraged me to do a teacher training, but I never had the intention to teach, and just did the teacher training to gain a better understanding for myself. I started shadowing her when she taught and covered a few of her classes when she was unavailable, while I was still working full time. The most difficult thing about transitioning to teaching was finding the confidence in myself that I was able to teach other people, and not doubt myself.

Why did you decide to move to Asia?

Asia is the place to be! After living in Europe for over 15 years Asia is such a refreshing change. I love it!

Madana came to live in 2010- it can’t be easy starting your own brand & teaching full time. Could you share with us a couple of challenges you encountered along the way?

Actually in the very early days I was still working full-time too ☺ One of the major challenges was not being able to move as fast as I would have liked, being a one-woman-show. It’s also very easy to get side tracked when you’re just starting, especially from comments and suggestions from friends and family. Which is why I kept Madana under wraps until the launch of the website.

How did the Eco-friendly angle come into the picture? TTT work with other Eco-friendly companies / labels and we know its not always smooth sailing. What keeps you going?

I’ve always been someone who appreciates our environment and nature, so the Eco-friendly angle was a natural one for me. Having your own business, no matter what it is, it’s a process. So it’s about finding what works and what doesn’t. I’ve now reached a stage where I know what works and what doesn’t, so now I’m just focusing on what works. I just take it one step at a time, and seeing the growth – even small – gives me so much joy and motivation to continue.

We love your jute mat- but best our readers hear the reasons from you! Why jute? And what do you think every practicing yogi should have as a basic prop, and why? (Other than a jute mat!)

I developed the jute mat based on a similar mat my friend had. I actually first tried to find something similar in Singapore, but failed, and that was the start of Madana. The Jute mat is great for those with damp or sweaty palms. The rubber and jute combination is just amazing, both natural fibers that complement each other very well. I’ve seen similar mats but with different combinations of materials, and it does not work as well as the rubber and jute combination. You won’t be able to slip even if you wanted to!! Every yogi needs to have a good mat, one they love and a positive state of mind. That’s all ☺

Yoga in this little red dot is still fairly young- how would you like it to evolve, in say 5 years time? What’s your dream for it to become?

Yoga in Singapore is growing so rapidly, it’s amazing! I am so happy to be a part of it. I would love for our yoga community to mature even more and to be more connected with one another. Which is where intheloop.com.sg will come in, to help everyone connect and for closer bonds to form.
